Troubleshooter for the Gaggia Classic range – with web search capability
This tool helps diagnose and fix common issues with the Gaggia Classic espresso machine, including priming and knocking noises. Follow the steps below to identify and resolve your problem.
1. Machine Won’t Turn On
- Check that the machine is plugged in and the outlet works.
- Inspect the power switch—does it click normally?
- Check the fuse or circuit breaker.
2. No Water Flow (No Coffee or Steam)
- Do you hear the pump running? If not, check the power and water tank.
- Ensure the water tank is properly seated and filled.
- Prime the machine if airlocked.
- If the pump runs but no water flows, descale the machine.
3. Weak Pressure / Poor Espresso Extraction
- Is the coffee puck too wet or dry? Adjust the grind or tamping.
- Check for clogs in the portafilter, shower screen, or dispersion plate.
- Ensure you’re using fresh, properly ground coffee.
4. Steam Wand Issues
- If no steam, ensure the machine is fully heated and the steam knob opens properly.
- If weak steam, check for blockages in the wand or tip.
- Regularly clean and purge the wand after use.
5. Leaks (Water or Steam Where It Shouldn’t Be)
- If water leaks from the portafilter, inspect the group gasket and basket fit.
- If water leaks from the base, check internal tubing and connections.
- If steam leaks from the knob, seals may need replacing.
6. Unusual Noises
- A loud pump may indicate an airlock—try priming the machine.
- Hissing or sputtering could mean a steam wand issue.
- Excessive vibration? Ensure the machine is on a stable surface.
If the issue persists, deeper maintenance (such as replacing seals, gaskets, or the pump) may be required.
